Effects of a non‐universal <scp>IMF</scp> and binary parameter correlations on compact binary mergers

چکیده

Binary population synthesis provides a direct way of studying the effects different choices binary evolution models and initial parameter distributions on present-day compact merger populations, which can then be compared to empirical properties such as observed rates. Samples zero-age main sequence binaries evolved by codes are typically generated from an universal IMF simple, uniform, for orbital period $P$, mass ratio $q$ eccentricity $e$. More recently, however, mounting observational evidence has suggested non-universality existence correlations between parameters. In this study, we implement metallicity- redshift-dependent alongside correlated $e$ in order generate representative populations at varying redshifts, with COMPAS code study variations rates overall properties.

Mergers of Binary Compact Objects

We work out the effects of hypercritical accretion, which transfers mass from the secondary to the primary (first-born) neutron star (NS) in a binary, showing that the mass of the primary would end up ∼ > 0.6M⊙ greater than the secondary NS in contradiction with the very nearly equal masses of the two NS’s in binaries measured to date. We discuss that the primary NS evolves into a low-mass blac...

Relativistic SPH Calculations of Compact Binary Mergers

We review recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamics of compact binary mergers using relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. Recent results are discussed for both double neutron stars and black hole – neutron star binaries. The gravitational wave signals from these mergers contain a lot of information about the masses and radii of the stars and the equation of state of...

Compact Binary Mergers and Accretion-Induced Collapse: Event Rates

This paper is a brief review of the topic of binary systems as sources of gravitational-wave emission for both LIGO and LISA. In particular I review the current estimates of the associated Galactic event rates and their implications for expected detection rates. I discuss the estimates for (i) the coalescence of close binaries containing neutron stars or black holes, (ii) white dwarfs going thr...

Long-term remnant evolution of compact binary mergers

We investigate the long-term evolution and observability of remnants originating from the merger of compact binary systems and discuss the differences to supernova remnants. Compact binary mergers expel much smaller amounts of mass at much higher velocities, as compared to supernovae and therefore the free expansion phase of the remnant will be short (∼ 1 10 yr). But merger events with high mas...

Binary galaxy spin correlations arising from mergers of galaxies

Statistics of spin orientations in binary galaxies may be used as a tool to study the formation process of galaxies. Helou found that the spins of spiral galaxies in binary systems are anticorrelated, and he suggested that it may have to do with the inclination dependence of the galaxy merger process. We study this dependence in small groups of galaxies. An N-body code is developed which uses a...
